An unreleased top-down racing game by Scott Adams and Commodore featuring dynamic tracks, weather effects, adjustable speeds, and a built-in track editor.
John Anderson’s Rally Speedway is an unreleased racing game developed by Scott Adams and associated with Commodore, intended for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.
Although it never saw an official commercial release, the game is recognised for its ambitious design and advanced feature set, particularly when viewed in the context of early 1980s racing titles.
The game is presented from a top-down perspective, offering a clear view of the racing circuits. Tracks are composed of interconnected junctions, multiple route options, and a wide range of corner types, encouraging players to plan their racing lines carefully. This branching track structure adds replay value and introduces a strategic element not commonly found in many racing games of the era.
Environmental hazards play a significant role in gameplay. Areas beyond the road surface are designed to disrupt vehicle control, pushing the car off course and forcing players to maintain precise steering. Road conditions also vary, with icy and wet surfaces affecting traction and handling, requiring players to adjust their driving style depending on the track environment.
John Anderson’s Rally Speedway includes multiple performance settings, with five selectable maximum speed levels and three acceleration options. These configurations allow players to tailor the game’s difficulty and responsiveness. An additional “only on a computer mode” is included, where hazards are rendered as decorative elements rather than physical obstacles, offering a more forgiving driving experience.
A notable feature is the inclusion of a track editor, allowing players to create and modify custom circuits. This functionality was uncommon for console racing games of the time and highlights the game’s experimental and forward-thinking design. Despite remaining unreleased, John Anderson’s Rally Speedway stands as an intriguing example of what could have expanded the Atari 5200’s racing game library.
