Gremlins for the Atari 5200 was an ambitious, unreleased action-RPG developed by Epyx as part of the well-known Apshai series.
Gremlins for the Atari 5200 is an action game developed by Atari and based on the popular Steven Spielberg film. Set in Billy’s living room just after midnight, the game challenges players to manage the chaos caused by roaming Mogwai and Gremlins. Presented from a third-person perspective, it tasks players with maintaining order while navigating an increasingly unpredictable environment.
In each level, the player controls Billy as he attempts to round up Mogwai and return them to their cage located in the upper right corner of the screen. At the same time, Gremlins must be eliminated using a sword before they can wreak further havoc. The game features a strict time limit, ending at 6:00 am when sunrise brings the level to a close. While players can advance simply by surviving until morning, completing all objectives yields significantly higher point totals, including bonuses for each rescued Mogwai.
Environmental hazards play a major role in the gameplay. Food scattered across the level can cause Mogwai to transform into Gremlins if consumed, while puddles of water can cause either creature to multiply. Some stages introduce additional elements such as refrigerators or popcorn machines that dispense food, or televisions that distract Gremlins and alter their behaviour.
Players begin with a limited supply of flash cubes, which can be used in emergencies to temporarily stun both Gremlins and Mogwai, providing a brief window of safety. As levels progress, the pace quickens and the number of creatures increases, raising the challenge and intensifying the need for quick thinking and precise control.
Gremlins for the Atari 5200 blends action, strategy and resource management, capturing the chaotic charm of the film while offering a steadily escalating gameplay experience.
