Featuring extensive dungeon generation, hidden rooms, varied enemies and classic top-down gameplay. Learn how this ambitious title expanded the Apshai universe.
Gateway to Apshai for the Atari 5200 was an ambitious, unreleased action-RPG developed by Epyx as part of the well-known Apshai series.
Designed to expand the lore and mechanics of the franchise, the game places players in the role of the descendant of Apshai’s greatest hero. Guided only by the prophecy revealed by the wise man Merlis, the player is thrust into a vast dungeon system where survival, exploration and progression are central to the experience.
The game features eight levels, each containing access to 99 distinct areas. Every dungeon layout is generated by selecting a number between 1 and 99, giving the player a new configuration to explore. As a top-down action-RPG, Gateway to Apshai introduces four core character stats—Strength, Agility, Luck and Health—along with basic starting equipment such as a dagger and leather armour. From there, progression relies heavily on exploration and discovery.
The dungeons remain hidden until the player traverses each area, revealing rooms, enemies and treasures. The player can move in four directions and use dedicated controls to attack enemies, locate traps with a LOCATE spell or uncover hidden doors with the SEARCH spell. Items scattered throughout the dungeon provide crucial support, including single-use weapon upgrades, healing salves, magical scrolls and valuable treasure.
Enemies such as snakes, swamp rats and bats appear only when the player enters the same room, increasing tension and unpredictability. Each dungeon run lasts 6 minutes and 30 seconds before the player is automatically transported to the next level, though manual exits are available in some versions. As the player progresses, enemies become faster, more aggressive and increasingly challenging, making advancement a test of strategy and reflexes.
Although Gateway to Apshai never officially released on the Atari 5200, its design reflects an early attempt at blending real-time action with expansive dungeon-crawling mechanics, offering insight into the evolution of RPG gameplay during the 1980s.
