Frisky Tom

Frisky Tom for the Atari 5200 is an unreleased prototype based on the obscure Nichibutsu arcade game of the same name.

Although never officially launched, the game was developed as a faithful home conversion in which players control Tom, a plumber tasked with maintaining an elaborate system of pipes. His goal is to keep water flowing consistently from the tank at the top of the screen to the reservoir below.

The house Tom works in is overrun with mice that roam the pipe network, chewing through critical sections and causing water flow to stop. When a pipe is damaged, the broken segment falls to the ground. Tom must retrieve the fallen pieces—carrying up to two at a time—and climb the pipe maze to repair each break. Some gaps can be stepped across, but larger ones require navigating alternative routes, adding a layer of strategy to movement.

Different types of mice appear throughout the structure, each distinguished by color and behavior, creating varied threats as Tom works to restore the system. When water flow is interrupted, the reservoir timer begins counting down from 5000 at a rate of 100 points per second. The flow must be restored before the timer reaches zero, or Tom loses a life and the level restarts. If Tom successfully maintains enough water in the reservoir, keeping the timer above 1500, he is rewarded with a bonus intermission.

Although Frisky Tom never saw commercial release on the Atari 5200, the prototype showcases an unusual and engaging mix of arcade-style movement, puzzle-like repairs, and time-sensitive resource management, making it a notable entry in the system’s unreleased catalog.
