Forbidden Forest

Forbidden Forest for the Atari 5200 is a released homebrew port of the original 1983 Atari 8-bit game created and published by Cosmi Corporation and developed by Paul Norman.

Because the Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit computer line share closely related hardware, independent developers have been able to convert many 8-bit titles to run natively on the 5200. Forbidden Forest is one of the most notable examples and is commonly distributed through multi-game homebrew cartridges, such as the Cosmi 2-in-1: Forbidden Forest & Slinky. These cartridges are typically available from specialist retro gaming vendors.

The game is an action shooter centered on archery combat, placing the player in the role of an archer battling through a series of atmospheric forest scenes. Each screen introduces new threats, including giant spiders, giant frogs and other supernatural creatures, all culminating in a confrontation with the final boss, the Demogorgon. Forbidden Forest is widely remembered for its distinct sense of atmosphere, its music and its dramatic death animations, elements that set it apart from many early 1980s action titles.

The Atari 5200 homebrew port preserves the core experience of the original release while giving 5200 collectors and enthusiasts access to a historically influential Cosmi game. The port maintains the tension, pacing and visual style that defined the 8-bit version, making it a valued addition to the 5200’s expanding homebrew library.
