Embargo appears on the Atari 5200 as part of the Gebelli Compilation, a homebrew release created by developer Wrathchild (mkeates) and distributed online on April 8, 2014.

This unofficial collection has no formal publisher and was shared freely with the retro-gaming community. The compilation gathers several Atari 8-bit titles originally released by Gebelli Software, including Embargo, Match Racer, Firebird, and Andromeda.

Wrathchild selected Embargo for inclusion due to its significance as one of the developer’s early favourites. The conversion retains the core mechanics of the Atari 8-bit original while adapting it for play on the Atari 5200 console.

Embargo is an action shooter often described as a blockade runner, in which the player pilots a ship attempting to break through a defensive ring of enemy craft surrounding a planet. The main objective is to retrieve supplies and successfully deliver them to a transport ship while evading or destroying patrolling hostile vessels. The game emphasises timing, precision, and spatial awareness as players navigate enemy formations to complete each run.

The homebrew release provides Atari 5200 users with access to a previously unavailable title from the Gebelli catalogue, preserving its gameplay while expanding the console’s library with a faithful conversion of this early action favourite.
