Diagnostic Cartridge

The Atari 5200 Diagnostic Cartridge, commonly referred to as the SALT (Stand ALone Test) cart, is a specialized tool designed for hardware technicians rather than general consumers.

Used primarily in service centers, the SALT cart played a critical role in identifying faults within the Atari 5200 console, including issues related to its notoriously fragile analog joysticks. As an internal support tool, it stands as an important part of Atari’s hardware maintenance ecosystem and provides insight into how the company handled system diagnostics during the console’s lifespan.

Developed by Atari, with Version 1.1 programmed by Robert Kowolik, the cartridge was closely tied to the system’s internal development codename: PAM. For this reason, many versions are labeled or referenced as PAM Diagnostic Carts. Several revisions exist—1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, and 2.3—each offering slight changes or additions to the test suite. These different builds provided technicians with increasingly refined tools for identifying hardware failures.

The Diagnostic Cartridge required support equipment for full functionality, most notably a loopback serial board used during Port Tests. When paired with the official Atari 5200 Field Service Manual, technicians had access to a detailed methodology for confirming the health of the console’s primary components.

Version 1.1 Test Capabilities

The SALT 1.1 cartridge includes several important diagnostic functions, such as:

• Any Video: Runs a general video output check.

• Color Bars and Grey Bars: Displays test patterns to verify color accuracy and video stability.

• Port Test: Evaluates joystick port functionality.

• Pokey Adjust: Calibrates analog joystick input and tests button response through the POKEY chip.

• Tone Test: Checks all four sound registers.

• RAM Test: Confirms the integrity of system memory.

• Verify OS ROM: Validates the console’s operating system ROM.

• Display Options: Toggles between Pass/Fail and error detail displays.

• Examin: Allows for direct inspection of specific registers.

Version 2.0 Enhancements

Later revisions introduced expanded diagnostics, including:

• CPU Test: Examines the console’s central processor functions.

• RAM and ROM Tests: Performs updated memory and system ROM verification.

• Pokey Adjust and Pokey Test: Provides more detailed analysis of the POKEY chip’s performance.

• GTIA Test: Checks the graphics capabilities of the GTIA chip.

• ANTIC Test: Verifies the text and graphics handling of the ANTIC chip.

• Set Test Options: Allows testing in single-run or continuous-loop modes.

The Atari 5200 Diagnostic Cartridge remains an essential piece of technical history. While not a conventional game, it represents Atari’s approach to quality control and hardware maintenance. For collectors, technicians, and historians, the SALT cart offers a rare window into the engineering tools that supported the Atari 5200 during and after its commercial life.
