Demon Attack

Demon Attack for the Atari 5200 is an unreleased title developed by Imagic, known for its fast-paced arcade action and similarities to the classic shooter Phoenix.

Although it never officially reached store shelves, the game eventually became available to players through a homebrew conversion based on the Atari 8-bit computer release. This adaptation preserves the core design of the original game while making it accessible on the 5200 console.

The gameplay centers on controlling a laser cannon positioned at the bottom of the screen. Players face continuous waves of brightly colored demons that move in unpredictable, erratic patterns. These enemies attack using bombs or lasers, requiring quick reflexes and precise timing to survive. Each demon behaves differently depending on the round, and destroying one may result in the enemy respawning or splitting into two smaller, faster demons. This mechanic introduces escalating difficulty and encourages players to adapt their strategy as the game progresses.

Advancing to the next round requires eliminating the designated number of demons for that stage. Every new wave increases the challenge with more aggressive movement patterns and higher attack frequency. The increasing intensity is a key part of Demon Attack’s appeal, making it one of Imagic’s most memorable arcade shooters across various platforms.

Although never officially released for the Atari 5200, the homebrew version allows enthusiasts to experience the game as it might have appeared on the console. Its faithful recreation from the Atari 8-bit version ensures that the gameplay remains intact, offering retro gaming fans an authentic look at what could have been a notable entry in the 5200’s library.
