Curse of the Lost Miner for Atari 5200: Homebrew Sequel by Baktra Software

Curse of the Lost Miner is a homebrew platform game developed by Baktra Software for the Atari 5200.

Serving as the sequel to Caverns of the Lost Miner, the game expands on the original’s mechanics while introducing more visually diverse cave environments and updated sound and music. These enhancements give the sequel a more polished presentation while maintaining the core retro gameplay style.

As in the first game, players control a smiling head navigating a series of single-screen caves. Curse of the Lost Miner features thirteen caves in total, each increasing in difficulty and filled with diamonds that must be collected before progressing to the next stage. The game retains the deliberate, methodical pacing and precision-based platforming that defined its predecessor.

The gameplay continues to draw strong influence from Manic Miner, capturing the challenge and structure of early 1980s platformers. The player must avoid deadly surfaces, moving hazards, and dangerous falls. Any contact with harmful objects or a drop from a high platform results in the loss of a life, encouraging careful jumps, pattern recognition, and well-timed movement.
