Cracky for Atari 5200: 2023 Homebrew Adaptation of the Arcade Game Cracked

Cracky for the Atari 5200 is a homebrew title developed and released by the enthusiast community long after the console’s commercial lifespan ended. As an unofficial project, it does not belong to the original Atari 5200 library but serves as a modern revival of the arcade game Cracked, also known as Crack’ed, which appeared in arcades and on platforms such as the Atari ST.

The 2023 release of Cracky on the Atari 5200 introduces an arcade-style action experience centered on protecting a vulnerable nest of eggs. Players control a crow tasked with defending the nest from a wide variety of approaching threats. The source material describes the crow using a “fully-automatic double-barrelled 12-gauge crow-killer,” offering a fast-paced defensive shooting mechanic that defines the game’s core loop.

A range of enemies—including birds, snakes, mice, spiders, fish, alligators, ghosts, and owls—attempt to steal or destroy the eggs. This creates a continuous challenge in which players must react quickly, anticipate enemy patterns, and maintain control over the nesting area.

The structure of the game draws inspiration from the Atari ST version, which featured 12 levels spread across six distinct environments. This multi-screen format suggests that the Atari 5200 adaptation follows a similar progression, offering varying stages, increasing difficulty, and an arcade-style sense of advancement.

As a community-driven project distributed through homebrew channels such as AtariAge, Cracky represents both a tribute to the original arcade title and an example of the ongoing creativity within the Atari 5200 fan community.
