Countermeasure on Atari 5200: Atari’s High-Stakes Military Action Game

Countermeasure for the Atari 5200 is a unique blend of action, strategy, and high-pressure decision-making. In this game, terrorists have taken control of a missile silo complex and activated a launch sequence targeting Washington, D.C. Players take command of a heavily armed supertank equipped with a long-range turret gun and must act quickly to neutralize the threat.

The primary objective is to destroy all missile silos before the ten-minute timer expires. Precision, navigation, and rapid engagement are essential as you move through the complex under the constant pressure of the countdown. Completing the mission in time rewards players with 10,000 bonus points, an extra life, and the in-game distinction of receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor.

If the timer reaches zero before all silos are destroyed, the game introduces an additional layer of tension. Players can still prevent disaster by docking their supertank at a silo to enter the War Room. There, they must correctly guess a three-letter fail-safe code composed of the letters L, E, and O. Combinations such as ELL, OOO, or OLE may disarm the missiles. A correct guess grants bonus points and a bonus life, while an incorrect one results in mission failure.

Countermeasure stands out on the Atari 5200 for its strategic depth, time-sensitive gameplay, and the unique challenge of balancing combat with code-breaking under pressure.
