Berzerk

Berzerk for the Atari 5200 is an adaptation of the influential arcade game originally created by Stern Electronics.

The game places players on the hostile planet Mazeon after a routine space mission takes a disastrous turn. Stranded and pursued by aggressive robotic inhabitants, the player must navigate a series of interconnected mazes while eliminating threats and avoiding deadly hazards.

Each screen consists of electrified walls that can destroy both the player and the robots on contact. The primary enemies, known as Automazeons, pursue and attack relentlessly. Players are equipped with a laser gun that fires in eight directions, controlled by pointing the joystick and pressing the fire button. This directional shooting mechanic is central to surviving the escalating challenges within each maze layout.

Robot behaviour can be used strategically. Players may lure enemy robots into electrified walls or into crossing their own laser fire, destroying them without direct combat. This mix of evasion, precision shooting and environmental awareness contributes to the game’s tension and pacing.

Berzerk on the Atari 5200 maintains the core elements that made the arcade version a classic—fast movement, unpredictable AI and maze-to-maze progression—while offering a faithful home-console experience. Its combination of reflex-driven action and strategy cemented its status as one of the standout early maze shooters in videogame history.
