Pilot a jet fighter, battle giant laser-spitting camels, and survive hyperspace bonus stages in this fast-paced retro experience.
Attack of the Mutant Camels for the Atari 5200 is an unofficial homebrew release based on Jeff Minter’s original Llamasoft title.
Although it was never commercially published for the 5200, the game was later converted from the highly compatible Atari 8-bit computer version, giving fans of the system access to one of Minter’s most distinctive creations.
The game offers a fast-paced and surreal twist on the gameplay concept introduced in The Empire Strikes Back for the Atari 2600. Instead of battling mechanical walkers, players pilot a small jet fighter tasked with defending their base from a bizarre and advancing herd of giant mutant camels. These camels spit laser-like fireballs and require numerous hits to destroy, changing color as they absorb damage. If even one camel reaches the player’s base, the game ends immediately, creating constant tension throughout each wave.
After eliminating all camels on a level, players enter a hyperspace bonus sequence that shifts the challenge from offense to evasion. During this segment, high-speed missiles streak across the screen, and the goal is simply to survive long enough to advance to the next wave. Each successive level increases the difficulty, pushing players to react faster and adapt to more aggressive attack patterns.
True to Jeff Minter’s signature style, Attack of the Mutant Camels features quirky humor, psychedelic visuals, and an unconventional premise that sets it apart from standard shooters of its era. The Atari 5200 homebrew port preserves that distinct tone while offering smooth gameplay that aligns closely with the original computer release.
For collectors, retro gaming enthusiasts, and fans of Llamasoft’s unique approach to game design, Attack of the Mutant Camels on the Atari 5200 stands as a fascinating and energetic homebrew adaptation of a cult classic.
